Kay Matthews

Founder and Executive Director

Kay Matthews is the Founder and Executive Director of the Shades of Blue Project, a nationally recognized organization dedicated to addressing maternal mental health disparities, particularly for Black and Brown communities. A passionate advocate, speaker, and thought leader, Kay has dedicated her life's work to ensuring equitable access to mental health care, support, and resources for expecting and postpartum individuals.

Her advocacy stems from her personal experience with stillbirth and undiagnosed postpartum depression, highlighting the urgent need for culturally relevant and community-centered maternal mental health services. Under her leadership, the Shades of Blue Project has expanded to provide direct community support, training programs, and national policy advocacy, ensuring that all birthing individuals—regardless of the outcome of their pregnancy—receive the mental health care and resources they deserve.

Kay has pioneered innovative initiatives such as the INSPIRE Method training and certification, which equips healthcare professionals and community organizations with the tools to address maternal mental health disparities effectively. She also leads efforts such as Black Maternal Mental Health Week, an annual event amplifying the voices and experiences of Black mothers and pushing for systemic change in perinatal care.

Recognized for her expertise and leadership, Kay collaborates with healthcare systems, policymakers, and grassroots organizations to implement sustainable solutions that reduce maternal health disparities and improve mental health outcomes for families nationwide. Her work continues to spark critical conversations and drive meaningful action toward equity, healing, and support for all birthing individuals.
