ABOUT
SHADES OF BLUE PROJECT
Breaking Cultural Barriers in Maternal Mental Health
Based in Houston, Texas, the Shades of Blue Project supports women of color and families experiencing postpartum depression, anxiety, and related maternal mental health challenges. The organization provides community resources, mental health advocacy, treatment support, and connections before, during, and after childbirth, serving communities locally and globally.
Our work is grounded in three core principles:
Acknowledge - Recognizing and validating the maternal mental health experiences of women of color
Respect - Honoring the full humanity and lived experience of every mother
Support - Providing comprehensive, community-rooted care and resources year-round

“For this work to grow and remain sustainable, we need strong partners who are willing to stand with us and invest in what works.”
Kay Matthews, Executive Director, Shades of Blue Project
2027 OFFICIAL THEME
ROOTED IN LEGACY
"Ten Years of Truth. A New Era of Action and Accountability."

For 2027,
The Shades of Blue Project is marking 10 years of amplifying Black Maternal Mental Health Week under the theme, “Rooted in Legacy: Ten Years of Truth. A New Era of Action and Accountability.”
This milestone year will honor the voices, leadership, lived experiences, and community power that built the movement, while examining how knowledge, recommendations, and commitments are translating into measurable change.
Taking place July 22–24, 2027, in Houston, Texas, the three-day Black Maternal Mental Health Summit experience will bring together families, community leaders, clinicians, researchers, advocates, funders, policymakers, and organizations to strengthen the field, advance community-led solutions, and move collectively from awareness to implementation, action, and accountability.

Together, we are honoring our stories, healing, and thriving for generational impact.
