Pause. Reset. Lead.: Why Restoration Belongs in Leadership During ESSENCE Week in New Orleans

Leadership work requires restoration

Black women leaders are often asked to hold multiple responsibilities at once. They are strategists, caregivers, advocates, founders, clinicians, organizers, problem-solvers, and bridges between communities and institutions. That work can be meaningful. It can also be demanding. Restoration is not a detour from leadership development. It is part of the infrastructure that makes sustainable leadership possible.

A leader who never pauses may continue moving, but movement alone is not the same as progress. Pausing gives us an opportunity to examine what we are carrying, what we have outgrown, and what the next season requires.

In New Orleans, let's pause without guilt

A meaningful pause creates room to hear what constant activity has been covering up.

What does your body need? Where are your boundaries being crossed? What are you doing from purpose, and what are you doing because people have learned to expect unlimited access to your energy? The retreat creates an opportunity to step outside daily demands and reconnect with the person behind the title.

Reset with intention

Resetting does not mean abandoning the work. It means returning to it with greater clarity.

This is a time to examine your priorities, reconnect with your values, strengthen relationships with other leaders, and identify practices that protect both your mission and your mental wellness.

It is also an opportunity to remember that community work should not require self-erasure.

Lead from a restored place

Our movements need leaders who are strategic and well-supported. Our organizations need leaders who can create humane cultures rather than reproducing exhaustion. Our families need leaders who understand that boundaries, rest, and joy are not signs of reduced commitment.

During a week filled with celebration and connection, the Shades of Blue Project Leadership Retreat makes room for something equally powerful: restoration with purpose.

Come to New Orleans ready to celebrate Black culture and ready to make space for yourself.
